The utilization of electric arc furnace slags in Denmark
During the past 15 years, Tarco Vej has successfully demonstrated that electric arc furnace (EAF) slags can be used as aggregate material for high performance asphalt surface courses. The chemical and physical properties of EAF slag are presented. These properties give the slags a number of advantages when compared to traditional aggregate materials for asphalt production. Durability, strength and workability can be improved when using EAF slag aggregates. The applicability of the slags can, however, easily be reduced by presence of other by-products or wastes. Asphalt wearing courses made with EAF slag have proven to be extremely resistant to stripping of the binder from the aggregate surface by moisture as well as to mechanical wear of the surface by traffic, even in regions with high percentages of studded tyres. The social benefits from this recycling project appear in two ways: the depositing of steel slags has been totally stopped, and the asphalt pavements lasts longer. Furthermore, through the processing of the slags entrapped scrap iron is recovered for recycling in the steel making process. (VDEh)
