Rheology of cement pastes using various accessories
The rheology of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) greatly depends an the rheology of the cement paste and an the volume and physical and chemical characteristics of the aggregates. In order to adequately model and predict the rheological properties of SCC, a better understanding of the rheology of typical cement pastes including microfillers and rheology-modifying admixtures used in SCC needs to be developed. However, rheological tests an cement pastes are often conducted an bulk samples that are not representative of the few Bozen micrometers-thick cement paste layer between two adjacent aggregates. In this paper, cement pastes at various water/binder (w/b) ratios and incorporating varying proportions of microfillers and rheology-modifying admixtures were tested using coaxial-cylinders, a vane rotor, and serrated and non-serrated parallel plates. The rheometer used is a shear stress- shear strain-controlled, high-resolution device with temperature control. The rheological properties of cement pastes obtained using the various testing techniques and accessories are compared, and implications of the results an the rheology of SCC are discussed.
