Two-girder rigid frame bridge combining girders and RC pier
A new type of steel-concrete hybrid rigid frame bridge structure was developed in which the steel girder connects rigidly to RC (reinforced concrete) pier without bearings. This type of bridge has many advantages. Maintenance costs are lower. The superstructure is lighter and bridge has much higher resistance to earthquake motion. However, the load transfer mechanism between the RC pier and steel girders is still not clear. Therefore, the structural characteristics of the hybrid rigid frame were investigated by cyclic loading test using a 1/3 scale specimen. Results indicated that the bridge was safe. The load sharing ratio between main girders and cross beams was determined by elasto-plastic finite element analysis.
