Study of filter media to remove bacteria from water
In this work, alternative filter media were studied to remove bacteria from water that can help situations of water contamination by bacteria. Metals with known antibacterial properties, as zinc, copper and silver, were impregnated in granulated active carbon, in different quantities. These carbon materials media were used to build-up filters to filtrate treated waters contaminated with coliform bacteria. Presence of heavy metals in treated water, removal of chlorine and bacteria and suspend material were analyzed. The filter media capacity of color, turbidity and chlorine removals were not significantly affected by the metals impregnations. The antibacterial properties were greatly improved; the plain carbon presented a Escheriachia coli CFU removal of only 7.94% while the modified filter media presented an average removal of 95.46%.
