Practical example of interpretation of half cell measurements on R.C. structures
Rebar corrosion in reinforced concrete structures can be detected by applying a half cell measurement system. This is possible, as the electrochemical potential of the reinforcement with and without active corrosion can differ by up to some hundreds of mV. Considerable economic savings can be realized by applying this technique, when compared to condition assessment and repair planning without previous area-wide potential mapping as it allows repair measures such as concrete replacement to be limited to the affected areas only. The article first explains the fundamentals of steel corrosion in concrete, the principle of potential field measurements and the influences that have to be considered for an optimum interpretation of the test results. A new software is shown to be an effective tool, which optimizes the practical application and the benefits of the half cell system. Processing of the measurement data with this analyzing software offers the basis for an optimum interpretation and appraisal of the corrosion potential of the reinforcement. The application of the software is demonstrated here by showing the example of a parking deck, which was damaged by rebar corrosion induced by de-icing salts. The Parking deck was investigated to this respect.
