Frost failure and rapid test method of concrete frost resistance
Failure of concrete due to freezing occurs under the effect of stretching stresses, caused by the hydraulic pressure in its structure. Microcracks in the volume of the material accumulate with subsequent gradual merging and formation of larger cracks, which join to form through cracks dividing the concrete into separate parts, thus leading to its complete failure. Such a parameter of materials as crack resistance characterized by the value of the stress intensity factor J8ind c) is the m ost sensitive to cyclic strains, which include intermittent freezing and thawing of concrete. It is shown that the frost resistance of concrete develops following the fatigue mechanism and can be described with utilization of the basic provisions of fracture mechanics and discussed a rapid test method of concrete frost resistance.
