Concrete frost resistance test methods
Frost resistance of concrete is an important problem for a large part of Russia with its severe climate. There are many cases of early failure of reinforced concrete structures under the action of water and deicing salts in cold weather. The country adopted a system of codes and standards that specify requirements for concrete in terms of frost resistance. The system includes a parametric series of frost resistance grades from F10 to F1000, design specifications for reinforced concrete structures taking into account frost resistance requirements according to service conditions, requirements for frost resistance of concrete in standards for specific types of reinforced concrete structures, and methods used to determine the frost resistance grade of a particular concrete. The development of methods for testing the frost resistance of concrete is an aspect of this problem. Many test methods based on different principles were developed. The majority of Russian experts believe the methods that involve repeated freezing and thawing of concrete specimens to be the most reliable.
