Tentative guidelines for the design of buildings with base isolators
This paper presents the status of the guidelines for the design of buildings with base isolators that are being developed by an Ad Hoc Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC). The recommendations for dynamic analyses and analytical procedures, criteria for determining seismic input, determination of base isolator properties, and design and detailing requirements for base isolated buildings. They also include recommendations for the analysis of equipment mounted in the buildings and for displacements due to wind forces, as well as retrofitting existing buildings with base isolators. The rationale for each issue addressed in the guidelines are fully presented. Comparison is made with current techniques and practices for conventional building design, when applicable. Mathematical models for use in determining the earthquake response of base isolated buildings are discussed.
