Corrosion and protective measures for water mains in Gothenburg, Sweden, with special reference to protection of existing mains suffering corrosion damage
The water network in Gothenburg consists mainly of cast iron and ductile iron pipes, with a simple outer coating of bitumen. Because of the increase of corrosion failures on the ductile iron pipes in recent years we have decided to use only well protected cast iron pipes. Since last year all new mains are provided with a high quality protective coating. Important existing mains, suffering from corrosion attack are provided with cathodic protection, if they are electrically connected to each other. If not, cathodic protection may still be used as an economical way of saving the pipes in areas where the surface reinstatement costs are low. In central areas and in roads with high surface reinstatement costs relaying of the corroded sections in the preferred option.
