This chapter summarizes the principal analytical results, which are well known in the literature, for the impact problem of two identical elastic rods. It solves an interesting problem to test the dynamic formulation: the impact of a hyperelastic disk on a fixed rigid plane. The relative motion of the two bodies is more complicated and the velocities considered are sufficiently high to simulate a violent shock. The chapter discusses contact occurring between an elastic disk and a rigid V‐shaped funnel. Time discretization is a difficult subject in nonlinear dynamics in general, and it is even more so when contact is involved. The chapter also discusses few examples which show that the contact formulation, when combined with the time‐stepping Newmark algorithm, produces quite reasonable results. When the Newmark algorithm does perform fairly conservatively, it tends to slightly overestimate the post‐shock energy.
