Numerical Examples of Quasi‐static Contact
This chapter presents some representative numerical examples that will allow to validate the weak contact form. It also presents some examples which are quasi‐static, and solves them by applying the computation method. This chapter addresses each computational method using an in‐house and nonlinear numerical code written in Fortran. It discusses Hertzian contact problem. A Hertzian contact problem involves contact between two bodies with simple geometries, and it exists in several variants: cylinder/cylinder, cylinder/plane, sphere/sphere, paraboloid/plane, etc. The rolling disk was an example of contact where large slips occur, and which admits a simple analytical solution with both large displacements and large rotations. The examples involving the contact of two beams, the extrusion of a cylinder and the interference fit, have shown that the method presented can deal with a combination of large displacements, large strains and large slips. The contact example involving two membranes shows that the formulation works well with small structures.
