The average ship dimensions given by way of example in this chapter can be used when designing and detailing waterfront structures, fenders and dolphins. Allowance must be made for the fact that these are average values that can vary by up to 10% either way. When it comes to passenger ships and cruise liners, the trend in recent years has definitely been towards ever larger vessels. Therefore, new terminals should be designed around a correspondingly large typical vessel. The trend towards ever larger bulk carriers appears to have reached a climax with the Chinamax Class. These 35 ships have been built since 2010 and are the largest of their kind in the world. There is no trend towards larger general cargo ships. In addition, new general cargo ships are becoming a rarity. Instead, container, semi‐container and special ships for transporting heavy cargos are replacing or have already replaced this traditional type of vessel.
