Well and Borehole Construction
This chapter provides the engineer or hydrogeologist with an overview of the main methods of constructing wells and boreholes, so that he or she can prepare and supervise a drilling contract, and can also recognise equipment in depots or when brought onto the site. It discusses manual construction of wells, describes the development of water wells and deals with wellhead completion works. Jetting is an effective means of constructing wells in shallow, unconsolidated aquifers. Well‐jetting relies on a combination of percussion and fluid circulation. The primary purpose of well development is to repair the damage done to the aquifer and to restore the well's performance. The method has been successfully applied to wells in hard rock aquifers in North America, Scandinavia and Africa. The secondary aim is to develop the aquifer itself by increasing the transmissive properties of the aquifer adjacent to the well to values actually greater than they were before drilling.
