This article discusses the use of distillation as an integral part of any future comprehensive recycling of community water supplies. The economic and technical aspects of distillation are presented in the article by using a hypothetical town and surrounding community as an example. Topics covered include: necessary preconditions; quantity of solids removed; preliminary treatment; alternative distillation procedures; disaster safeguard; distillation residue; costs; difficulties in cost estimation; operating efficiencies; distillation methodology; types of apparatus; countercurrent flash still; controlled film still; comparison of compelled film stills; wiped film tubulator and flat plate; centrifugal recompression; multistage centrifugal stills; selection of a still; and, experimental procedure.
