Developing a Problem Structuring Sensibility in Engineering
This chapter is an account of what a specific group of engineers has been doing when they have been bringing a problem structuring sensibility to their practice. It presents a summative, reflective account of the results from the EngD in System Programme at the University of Bristol from roughly 2009 to 2020. The journey that Peter Checkland and his colleagues undertook at the University of Lancaster in the 1970s in applying the methods and tools of Systems Engineering, as they were known at the time, to complex problems in business and management directly led to the development of soft systems methodology (SSM). The diffusion of SSM has been applied in a range of disciplines, but the key methodological publications have largely been in Operational Research or systems journals. The chapter considers the epistemic shift that Checkland and Holwell describe as a more pedagogically useful way of characterising hard and soft systems view.
