The use of problem structuring methodology is a reasonable practice for engineers to adopt. The author sees problem structuring method (PSMs) as the way forward for engineering practice, but these need some degree of interpretation from how they have been developed and presented in the Soft Operational Research/PSM literature. The use of PSMs or approaches that have emerged from other research traditions relating to the co‐production of knowledge models with citizen groups represents new ways of working that seek to break down the barriers that have divided expert practitioners from the publics affected by their decision‐making. Valuing process knowledge on an equal basis with representational knowledge is essential to realising a problem structuring sensibility in engineering practice. Much of what is appreciated in engineering practice is knowledge about how to do things (i.e. this is engineering ‘know‐how’), and engineering education is largely directed towards this outcome.
