Viewpoint – Excessive Zeal to Publish
In this month's “Viewpoint” the author, who is the editor of “Science,” addresses the issue of scientists who simultaneously publish material in two or more journals, who submit dual manuscripts, or who repeat publication at intervals of material that is different in form but not in substance. He states that the reasons behind such actions include the delay that occurs when a journal is slow in processing manuscripts and the fact that many articles are written by large groups where several authors wind up cited in the “et als.” However, these reasons do not pardon scientists from their offense. Editors of journals are now taking a firmer stand on such actions by banning authors from publishing in their journal and by joining together with other editors to ban offending authors from the pool of journals in the author's field of research.
