Most of the standard forms of contract clearly state what constitute the contract documents. Typical contract documents for a small residential project might be simply a set of production drawings showing exactly how the building is to be constructed, a schedule of the work to be carried out which the contractor has priced, and the standard printed form of contract. An employer may have a lawyer make various amendments to a standard form. This is much cheaper than getting a bespoke form and it does enable specific requirements to be accommodated. It is important that all the documents comprising the contract documents are consistent with one another. This is extremely difficult to achieve in practice even when the only documents are a standard form contract, some drawings, and priced bills of quantities. If there are many contract documents, consistency is virtually impossible.
