This chapter treats durability indicators (including the properties and characteristics) used for durability design. The basic properties related to deterioration processes are first reviewed for the chemical, microstructure and microstructure‐related, transport, and mechanical properties. The literature data on these properties are collected and analyzed for their correlations, and some fundamental relations are recalled for these properties. Then, the laboratory characterization methods are reviewed for these properties with analysis of their measurement dispersion. Complementary to properties characterization, durability performance tests are also reviewed, with their pertinence to durability design discussed. The last part of the chapter analyses the use of these indicators in design with a comprehensive review of the probable indicators for different durability processes. Some examples are provided on the specification of durability indicators with respect to environmental actions and service lives.
