This chapter provides the general framework for durability design of concrete structures. The fundamentals for durability design are introduced as the deterioration law of performance, the durability limit state, and the service life. The content of durability design is detailed for different phases in the life cycle of a concrete structure. The prescriptive approach and performance‐based approach are reviewed in depth for their respective strengths and weaknesses in the design procedure. The model‐based method is particularly addressed with a comprehensive review on the available durability models for their uncertainty and reliability. The last part of the chapter is dedicated to life‐cycle engineering. The basic concepts of life‐cycle engineering are introduced, and life‐cycle cost analysis is established for the maintenance planning of concrete structures during their service life.
