Standards and Formats
Standardization of information is essential to proper leveraging of information within building information modeling (BIM) project. Enumeration is another aspect of standardization that allows for easier cataloguing and data access. Just as the Dewey Decimal System is an alphanumeric format that organizes books based on category, the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) maintains the MasterFormat and UniFormat formats, which organize construction information based on the type of work performed and the type of element being installed in a project. Hierarchical organization of information allows relevant data to be viewed based on the amount of information necessary at a given points in a project. The chapter offers a brief discussion of the different OmniClass tables. Many of the tables are more of a higher‐level project management information method rather than model data management formats.
