Environmental Effects on Oxide/Oxide Composites
Oxide–oxide ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are among the leading candidate materials for use in high temperature structural applications, especially in components requiring a long service life in oxidizing environments. High temperature mechanical behavior and properties of oxide–oxide composites of alumina and mullite are discussed. The effects of steam on high temperature performance of oxide–oxide CMCs are evaluated for different types of loading. Both fiber‐ and matrix‐dominated types of composite behavior are considered. The presence of steam significantly degraded the performance of oxide–oxide CMCs under sustained loading (creep) as well as under low frequency cyclic loading. Examination of the fracture surfaces points to matrix densification and subsequent loss of matrix porosity as the key mechanisms behind the degradation of mechanical properties and performance at elevated temperatures in steam.
