Oxide–Oxide Composites
The continuing need for materials with improved high temperature stability, oxidation resistance, and high toughness has fueled the research and development of oxide–oxide composites. These composites require a crack deflecting mechanism at the fiber to provide the toughness; both interface coatings and porous matrices have proven successful in providing this function. Composites containing interface coatings have been demonstrated but have not yet been adopted, while porous matrix materials have advanced to commercial availability and are being evaluated for use in select applications. This chapter provides an updated overview of high temperature (>1000°C) oxide–oxide composite technology, technology development, current research issues, and what might be expected in future derivatives.
