Tests with Three Unequal Principal Stresses
The results of triaxial compression tests may be evaluated by comparison with results from tests in which three unequal principal stresses are applied. Such tests include plane strain, true triaxial, simple shear, directional shear and torsion shear tests. Results from these tests are reviewed and compared with those from triaxial compression tests. This includes stress–strain and strength behavior of sands and clays. The strength results are modeled by a three‐dimensional failure criterion expressed in terms of stress invariants. Effects of rotating principal stress directions are reviewed and compared with those from true triaxial tests. Effects of shear banding under three‐dimensional stress conditions with and without stress rotation are discussed and effects of cross‐anisotropy on the observed behavior are reviewed.
