Sustainable Florianópolis Action Plan, Santa Catarina
The city of Florianópolis started to think about sustainability since 2008, with the first publication of the “Floripa 2030” – a participatory process of rethinking development and providing guidelines with the community. This chapter provides an overview of the proposed action plan, offering a quick diagnosis with objective and analytical elements about the situation of a variety of sectors that affect city life. It also provides a brief analysis on the way the city is addressing transition issues with these actions. As the plan demonstrated, Florianópolis presents several challenges and opportunities for sustainable development. This plan stipulated a clear and precise definition of sustainability and how the prosperity of Florianópolis in this direction should be measured. It concludes by conceding that sustainability is transdisciplinary and complimentary such that urban transport, for instance, could be linked with urban planning and infrastructure planning, thus emphasizing on the convergence of issues in order to achieve the expected results.
