Engineering Geology and the Central Valley Project
The plan, design, construction, and operation of the multifaceted Central Valley Project's structures required the help of engineering geologists who faced—besides the usual investigation of foundations, tunneling, and construction materials—some unusual regional problems, such as land subsidence caused by overdraft of ground water, hydrocompaction of dry semiarid soils, subsidence of deltaic‐peaty deposits, and pollution and sedimentation in canals and reservoirs.
