Transverse Vibration of Strings
This chapter considers the free and forced transverse vibration of strings. It solves the free vibration equation of a string of infinite length using three different approaches: traveling‐wave solution, Fourier transform‐based solution, and Laplace transform‐based solution. The chapter derives the solutions to the steady‐state forced vibration response of a fixed‐fixed string subjected to a concentrated force and the steady‐state response of a fixed‐fixed string subjected to a load moving at a constant velocity. Although the mathematical description of a vibrating string is given by the wave equation, a quantum model of information theory is used to obtain a one‐degree‐of‐freedom mechanical system governed by a second‐order differential equation. Shahruz developed a mathematical model for the transverse vibration of the moving wire used in the electrodischarge machining process in the form of a nonlinear partial differential equation.
