Analysis of Probability of Failure of Dams
This chapter summarizes five common tools in dam reliability and risk analysis: failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), event trees, fault trees, first‐order reliability method (FORM)/first‐order second‐moment method (FOSM), and Monte Carlo Simulation. FMEA can provide a systematic procedure for analyzing failure modes of dam systems by isolating each component and describing the effects of individual component failure modes on the system as a whole. A post‐accident analysis identifies consequences of an accident sequence. This is the most common application of ETA for dam safety. When FTA is conducted for a large system, such as a dam system, it is important to clearly define the bounds. Usually, multiple subsystems exist in a large system; FTA is used to model a number of functionally linked subsystems. The chapter also presents the technique of Bayesian networks, which is used to develop a probability‐based tool for conducting probabilistic analysis of dam failure.
