Optimizing wind turbine parameters to enhance power generation
The fluctuation in wind speed causes deviations in the power coefficient and decreases the efficient operation of wind turbines. The efficiency improvement is obtained if the turbine rotor speed tracks its optimal value. As the wind turbine characteristics are non-linear, a robust non-linear control law based on the sliding mode approach is developed in this paper. The proposed regulation develops the control law for the electromagnetic torque and the aerodynamic torque, and the combined effort drives the turbine rotor speed to coincide with the optimal rotor speed. It is observed that the turbine shaft tracks the optimum speed with the mean square error of 1.6 × 10−3. In addition, the power coefficient of the turbine is maintained closer to its maximum value. The proposed methodology proves to be effective in adapting to the variations in wind speed.
