Member Based Design Using a Reorganized ACI 318 Building Code
The current ACI 318 building code provides a mixture of behavioral based and member based design. While the current code format has served the design profession well over the years, it has grown more cumbersome as new advancements continue to be integrated. Furthermore, the current format often leads designers to question whether they have missed any of the code requirements. One of the primary goals in the next generation of the ACI 318 building code is to provide a more user friendly design document that can also provide a framework for future innovations. For this reason, the code is being reorganized for the 2014 edition and will be constructed using a member based framework. This paper provides an overview of the proposed organizational structure and discusses how structural design will be approached using this new framework.
