Localization of Levee Weakening Using Surface Displacements
This paper presents a localization technique to detect an evolving weakened zone within a section of an earthen levee. This technique uses displacements measured solely on the surface of the levee along with a neural network algorithm to identify the location and extent of weakening. The analysis relies on observations made from general numerical simulations and does not require any knowledge about the actual levee material properties or physical phenomena taking place internally. Capabilities of the developed detection and localization algorithm are demonstrated using displacements obtained from centrifuge tests of levee models experiencing an internal gradual weakening. The proposed technique was found to be capable of detecting levee weakening with a reasonable accuracy.
