Wood Truss Installation Loads Due to OSHA Fall Protection
Recent changes to the fall protection exemption for residential construction require that all workers at 6 feet above a lower level must have a net, guardrail system, or be attached to a personal fall arrest system. The purpose of this paper is to examine the capacity of anchorages for personal fall arrest systems on light-frame wood truss roofs. A novel lateral load testing device was used to load trusses out of plane. Both mono-slope queen post single trusses and two braced king post trusses were tested. Lateral loads of single trusses were approximately 10% of the capacity required for a personal fall arrest system. Variable displacement rates greater than 25.4 cm/min produced similar maximum load and failure results to impact testing. Workers should never tie off to a single truss element. Further research is underway to develop suitable truss assemblies that can be used as anchorages.
