Pressure Fluctuations in Reattaching Flow
Wall-pressure fluctuations are measured behind a plate fixed normal to the wall, and spanning the test section of a water tunnel. Two plates are used, the ratios of their heights to the duct width being 0.112 and 0.161. The Reynolds number based on the duct width is typically 2.5 × 106. It is found that the fluctuations have a maximum rms intensity at a point approximately three-quarters of the way along the recirculating flow. The intensity of the fluctuations declines only slowly downstream of the maximum. Inertial scaling using the density of the fluid, the undisturbed velocity and the height of the gate brings together the spectra for different velocities. Evidence is presented for the existence of an inner recirculation just behind the deflecting plate; it extends over approximately one-third of the main recirculation region. The limitations of the measurement imposed by electrical instrumentation, and experimental conditions are described. It is hoped that the result of the present investigation may be useful in the design of conduits.
