Design Method for Flat Geotextile Tubes
Using geotextile tubes to construct dikes for land reclamation has been widely applied. The tubes are usually filled with slurry made of sand, silt or clay. Since the dimensions of the tube are quite large, the tube usually takes a very flat shape. The circumference tensile force is a dominant factor for constructing a safe geotextile tube dike. The existing design methods are suitable for sausage shaped tubes but not for the flat ones. Based on the flat tubes features, an iterative procedure was compiled. The shape of the large size geotextile tube, as well as the relationship among tube size, pumping pressure, unit weight of the slurry and tensile stress developed in the geotextile tube were determined. The soil heterogeneity was also considered in the procedure.
