Areal Variations of Mean Annual Runoff
Two phenomena, channel loss and ground-water outflow, make the determination of areal variations of mean annual runoff in some regions difficult or impossible. In some regions, improved definitions of the variations may be achieved by increasing the number of stream-gaging stations or by locating the stations where channel losses and ground-water outflow are small. In other regions, particularly desert regions, improved definition may be achieved by use of supplemental information, such as infiltration characteristics and rainfall-runoff relations. However, the variations in many large areas probably will remain indeterminate.
