Repeatability of Earth Pressure Cell Measurements under Falling Weight Deflectometer Loading
In any scientific experiment, it is important to have a sense of precision of those instruments used for data collection prior to using that data to draw conclusions in research. This study determined the repeatability of the measurements made by the embedded earth pressure cells (EPC) at the test track. Falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing was performed directly above these gauges, and the absolute difference from multiple drops at varying load levels was calculated as a measure of within-gauge variability. This study found more variability occurred in the EPCs at the surface of the base layer as opposed to the surface of the subgrade. EPC repeatability, however, was not strongly influenced by load level or pressure magnitude. Earth pressure cells placed on the base material are expected to have a within-gauge precision of 0.8 psi while subgrade pressure plates' within-gauge variability should be under 0.3 psi.
