Productive Construction in Developing Regions
The efficient management of the cost and specifically the duration of a project normally involves the utilization of a productive labor force. This may be especially true in an economically developing country. Some areas of developing regions, however, are rapidly becoming industrialized and the use of equipment is thereby increasing. This paper, specifically, investigates the utilization of both labor intensive methods and modern equipment on a particular construction job site located in a large city in a developing country. Applications cited include: cranes, scaffolding, formwork, elevators, hoists, and concrete placing methods. In addition, the treatment of construction labor, safety, and temporary housing is taken into consideration. Photographs are utilized to describe and illustrate the project. The information presented should assist international consultants and contractors with techniques and resources required for the management of efficient construction operations in developing countries.
