Education and Service to EWRI and ASCE through EWRI History and Heritage Sessions
Service to the profession can provide opportunities to learn from others, for networking, and to participate in EWRI Congress sessions. Sharing experience with EWRI attendees on EWRI service may be useful to those getting started in EWRI and/or ASCE or those branching out to new EWRI and/or ASCE areas. In addition to a 2004 EWRI Congress Education Council session for young member research, Jerry Rogers served as committee founder and first 2000 Chair of the EWRI History and Heritage Committee (HHC). Initially, a HHC purpose was drafted, submitted to the EWRI Board, approved, and revised periodically. Committee members were invited to participate, committee meeting travel authorization was sought, and speakers were invited to annual EWRI sessions or symposia. Several case study examples include the 2007 EWRI History and Heritage Symposium in Tampa, (Rogers, Jerry [Editor], Environmental and Water Resources: Milestones in Engineering History, Tampa, FL, May 2007, ASCE), and three 2013 sessions and poster for HHC in Cincinnati. In addition, the author served as author of a paper on Boulder City history and infrastructure and co-editor of Hoover Dam 75th Anniversary History Symposium, with Wiltshire, Gilbert, and Rogers at the ASCE 2010 Annual Conference in Las Vegas. The EWRI engineering history papers are educational for young to old EWRI members, middle, high school, and university students, faculty, and practitioners.
