A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The materials available and the methods selected to build a rolled-fill embankment dam in north-central British Columbia are described. The specification requirements for the dam materials are given. A limited working season and a tight construction schedule dictated high volume fill placing. The contractor selected a 15,000 ft single-flight high-speed conveyor to move 57,500,000 cu yd of soil from a glacial moraine to a processing plant. Forty-eight percent of the material was processed and reblended to form selected zone materials in a $10,000 plant built in 9 months. The handling system includes high-speed belts and automatic staged disc brakes. The system has been effective and reliable, and the project is ahead of schedule after initial delays.
