Refurbishment of the Thirlmere Aqueduct (United Kingdom)
This paper describes in detail the challenges faced by the project team during the inspection and refurbishment of the Thirlmere Aqueduct. This raw water aqueduct is a prime example of Victorian engineering at its best and supplies up to 250 million litres of raw water per day to United Utilities' Lostock Water Treatment Works for treatment and the provision of potable water to over 1 million people in Manchester. For the first time in over 50 years the entire length of the Thirlmere Aqueduct has been drained for inspection and essential maintenance.
