Performance-Based Design: Structural Reliability Considerations
Codes and standards for structural design are prescriptive, quantitative, and detailed, and in most instances they have served the profession reasonably well. During the past decade, however, a number of advances and significant changes have occurred in building design and construction. The performance concept provides a new design paradigm for responding to new building technologies and increased public expectations. When performance goals are expressed for different occupancy classifications in probabilistic terms, performance-based design becomes a vehicle for implementing risk analysis tools directly in structural design of new buildings and evaluation of existing facilities.
