Use of Deep Mixing Return Material for Levee Construction
USACE Contract LPV 111 entailed the treatment of 1.3 million cubic meters of soil by the deep mixing method. Approximately 400,000 cubic meters of spoils, termed recycled embankment material (REM) in the LPV 111 contract, would be generated. In lieu of removal of the REM from site, the USACE elected to incorporate the REM in levee construction. Utilization of the REM saved approximately 15M dollars in construction costs. In order to confirm the viability of utilizing REM, a comprehensive field and laboratory testing effort was undertaken. The testing program included multiple test embankments, wherein a range of REM curing ages and compaction variables were tested. Test program results confirmed that REM could be used, while maintaining the performance criteria associated with traditional clay levees.
