A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In engineering works covering an extended field, with operations involving practically the same conditions, system and economy are obtained by the adoption of general standards of form and specification. This is particularly true of the levee work on the Mississippi River, extending over a reach of about 1 000 miles of river, with some 1 200 miles of levees, and where there is but slight variation in climatic, topographical and geological conditions. For convenience of administration the Mississippi River Commission has divided the portion of the alluvial basin from Cairo to the Gulf into four districts, each of which is placed under the supervision of an officer of the United States Engineer Corps.
