SCL Technologies for Stressed Tee Timber Bridges
New forms of engineered timber materials allow engineers to design longer lasting timber bridges with longer spans. Advances in treating processes and construction methods such as stress laminating can lead to longer service live than ever before. One form of engineered timber material being used is parallel strand lumber (PSL). PSL has design stresses up to 35% higher that standard solid sawn or glu-lam material. The unique manufacturing methods associated with PSL allow the engineer to design secondary-laminated structurally efficient shapes like tee and box beams. Post-tensioning these tee and box beam bridges yields even higher strength which can lead to shallower superstructures and longer spans.
