On an Economical and Efficient Railroad Bridge Floor
On asking the late Mr. A. D. Briggs, F. Am. Soc. C. E., Massachusetts Railroad Commissioner, some years ago, certain questions in regard to a form of standard bridge floor, he said that he did not think such a standard could be designed, for the reason that the cases differed so much for which it was needed. Meaning by the floor the immediate supports of the rails and their appurtenances, consisting ordinarily of the ties and guard rails, I do not agree with him; for, on examination, I think it will be found that there is practically very little variation in the demands on a railroad bridge, floor, or the conditions imposed on it.
