A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Statistical data indicated that more than 65% excavation projects in China encountered different problems during construction and remedial measures had to be taken to mitigate risk of excavation failures. In some cases, catastrophic excavation failures led to massive fatalities and property losses. Lessons learned from failed cases will help designers, contractors, and owners avoid similar problems/mistakes in advance and then failure incidence can be reduced for future projects. In light of this consideration, this paper reviews typical excavation failure cases encountered in practice within the past three decades in China. Generally, these excavation failures can be categorized into 15 different models; for each failure type, its failure mechanism and major triggering factors were explored and discussed and then schematically illustrated by a conceptual model.
