Characterization and Modeling of Harmful Algal Blooms: A Review
Harmful algal bloom (HAB) occurrences are continuing to increase globally, with often far-reaching environmental, economic, and social consequences. Given the detrimental effects due to their growing presence in critical water bodies, there is a growing need to develop methods for detecting, monitoring, and modeling HABs to design effective remediation strategies. The challenges in quantifying and modeling HABs come from their inherent complexity resulting from the myriad factors influencing HABs, lack of comprehensive data, and the interdisciplinary nature of HAB research. There are limited articles addressing the quantification and modeling of HABs. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the methods used for the quantification and modeling of HABs, as well as a comparison of these methods to understand the abilities, strengths, and limitations of these methods. The review provides guidance on selecting appropriate modeling strategies depending on specific objectives, data availability, and the required level of detail in understanding and forecasting HABs. Recommendations for ongoing and future efforts for improved characterization, understanding and estimation of HABs are presented.
