Proactively Stress‐Testing Water Treatment Facilities for Harmful Algal Blooms
A user‐friendly, Excel‐based tool was used to understand how existing water treatment processes handle cyanotoxins and to modify standard operating procedures to improve performance.
Water treatment plants should understand the full capabilities of contact time throughout the treatment train in the event they must remove extracellular (dissolved) cyanotoxins.
Utilities at risk for cyanotoxin events could benefit from using existing chlorination facilities as a tool to treat extracellular cyanotoxins in certain situations.
