Survey of European Concrete Crossties
Since early 1960, twenty test sections of railway track utilizing concrete crossties have been installed in the United States and Canada, indicating a widespread interest among railroads in the possible economies and efficiencies offered by the concrete tie. Because concrete ties are already widely used in Europe and elsewhere, it is logical for American engineers to look to foreign experiences for answers to some of the questions posed during this period of development. Summarized herein are the design, production, and service performance data secured during a 1961 investigation of concrete ties in Western Europe. Four types of ties are described and data are given on design, construction materials, specifications, and manufacturing processes. Installation and maintenance procedures are described and a comparison is given of initial costs. Based on United States and European experiences to date (1962), a continued growth of the use of concrete crossties may be expected.
