Suite of Mathematical Flood Plain Models
Described in the paper is a compendium of mathematical models for use in flood plain management. The models make it possible to establish the steady-state water surface profile or to generate for a given flood event the time graphs of flow depth and average flow velocity on elemental areas of the flood plain and thus to determine the depth and duration of inundation, as well as the degree of sediment deposition, erosion, and violence of the floodwaters anywhere on the flood plain. Given the flood frequency distribution, it is possible to establish the frequency distribution of flood damages and thus to compare the economic merits of alternative flood mitigation measures.
